Restoring archived files
If you have lost data or encountered a problem, you can restore your site information using files in your archive. To restore the files, the system uploads the specified files from the backup server to the working directories on your site.
If a file by the same name, as the one being restored, exists on your server, then WEBppliance does not replace or overwrite the existing file, in other words, the file is not restored from the backup.
Note: Restoring files may take a long time to complete, depending on the size of the archived files and the speed of your network connection.
Important:
Once restored,
WEBppliance automatically uncompresses
the restored tgz
file and updates your working directories and files with the archived
content.
DO NOT manually uncompress
the restored tgz
to make changes to the archived files and upload them again as a compressed
tgz. If the
files in the archive have been manually modified, you will be unable to
restore files from the archive again. This is a security measure implemented
to ensure that the archived files are not corrupted by malicious scripts.
To restore data from the archive:
In the shortcuts area of the Home page, click Backup/Restore (Tools section).
In the Backup/Restore submenu, click Restore. The Restore form opens.
To restore, choose one of the following options.
Download. Downloads the file from the archive to your active server.
FTP. Uses the FTP utility to restore files from the archive to your active server.
Note: Large files may take a long time to transfer depending on the quality of your Internet connection. FTP is recommended as a faster and more reliable option when transferring files.
The Download option is ideal for small files.
In the Select Backup File text box, enter the name of the file that you want to restore from the archive.
Alternatively, click Browse to locate the file to restore.
In the Email field, enter the email address where you want to receive email status notifications. If you do not want to receive email notifications, leave the field blank.
Click Restore.
A confirmation dialog opens.
Click Ok to proceed with the restore.
A Progress window opens, displaying the status of the restore. If the restore fails with errors, the errors are listed in the Progress window.
FTP is recommended as a faster and more reliable option, especially for large files.
Note: You should have the FTP utility installed on the backup server to use this transfer mode.
In the FTP Server field, enter the name of the FTP server where you want to restore data.
In the FTP Login field, enter the login information for the FTP server.
In the FTP Password field, enter the login password to the FTP server.
In the FTP Location field, enter the directory path of the directory on the FTP server you want to use as the backup directory. If you leave the field blank, the files will be saved to the home directory of the user specified in step 2.
In the Email field, enter the email address where you want to receive email status notifications. If you do not want to receive email notifications, leave the field blank.
Click Restore.
The Restore form opens.
In the Restore form, select the check boxes of the files you want to restore.
Note:
All files backed up are displayed.
The naming convention of the files are as follows:
<webppliance_hostname>_<site_name>_<YYYY>_<Month>_<date>_<Hours>_Minutes>.tar.gz
Where:
<webppliance_hostname>
is the name of the WEBppliance server
<site_name>
is the name of the site on which you have an account
<YYYY>_<Month>_<date>_<Hours>_Minutes>
is the time-stamp when the backup was taken.
For example, backing up a file from the site mysite.com
hosted on the WEBppliance server mywebppliance.com
on Jan 06, 2003 at 11.30 would result in the following backup file:
mywebppliance.com_mysite.com_2003_January_06_11_30.tar.gz
Click Restore.
The status of the restore will be conveyed through an email notification to the specified address.
